Teacher Training College

What Do You Learn at Teacher Training College?
Your curriculum will vary depending upon the age of the students you want to teach. Those hoping to become kindergarten or elementary school teachers typically take courses such as:

  • Art
  • Literature
  • Mathematics
  • Music
  • Philosophy of education
  • Physical science
  • Psychology of learning
  • Social science
  • Teaching methods
Those who attend teacher training college hoping to teach secondary school, by contrast, often focus more closely on the subject they want to eventually teach.

Almost all teachers-in-training also take classes in computers and other technologies like multimedia or the Internet. And most programs require at least one year of a student-teaching internship.

Do I Have to Go to a Teacher Training College?
While most people do become a teacher by earning a bachelor's degree from a teacher training college and then applying for their license, some states offer alternative licensure programs for those who already have a bachelor's degree in the subject they plan to teach but who haven't completed the required education courses necessary to obtain a license. Similarly, private school teachers need a bachelor's degree but don't require a license, while preschool teachers and vocational teachers may be able to get an entry level job based on experience rather than formal training.

Attending a teacher training college accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council may make it easier to fulfill your state's licensing requirements, but you can attend a non-accredited program if you find one that you prefer.
