How Do I Become a Professor?
While the term "professor" often gets used to describe any postsecondary teacher, it actually refers to a specific ranking in the academic hierarchy. Most colleges and universities hire faculty as an instructor first, and then that person can move up to assistant professor, then associate professor, then professor.
Most applicants require a doctoral degree to become a professor, especially for a full-time, tenure-track position. You may be able to get a job at a lower level or a part-time position, however, with a master's degree or as a doctoral candidate, particularly in certain disciplines like the arts. Earning a doctoral degree can take six years, including the time it takes to write your dissertation. Ph.D.'s in the humanities often take longer to finish, while more technical fields like engineering can be shorter.
Do I Really Need a Doctorate to Become a Professor?
This depends again on whether you use the word "professor" to simply indicate any postsecondary teacher. A true professor almost always needs a doctorate, or at the very least a master's degree and a great deal of professional experience. Some people with master's degrees may get hired as an instructor and be able to work their way up to a higher rank, particularly with impressive research or excellent teaching skills.
2-year colleges, on the other hand, often hire those with master's degrees and some teaching experience, but someone with a Ph.D. may have an advantage in a competitive field.
You should try to get a job as a graduate teaching assistant while earning your degree, as this teaching experience can proves invaluable on a resume.
