How to become a History Teacher

How Do I Become a History Teacher?
Most historians choose to teach while pursuing their own research. Although many opt to become a postsecondary history teacher, others prefer educating younger minds and work at a middle or secondary school.

Teaching at a college or university generally allows you to have a more flexible work schedule and do more outside the classroom such as research and consulting. But to teach at this level, you generally need a Ph.D., although you may find a position teaching at a community college with a master's degree.

If you'd prefer to teach history to middle or high school students, then you must earn a bachelor's degree (most likely in history or a related field), complete an approved teacher training program, and qualify for a license according to the standards set by your State Education Board. Each state's qualifications may differ.

Why Should I Become a History Teacher?
If you love examining the past, then teaching is one of the most stable professions for a historian. Of all the social science professionals, historians are among the most likely to teach.
